Are you stressed about failed IVF cycles, recurrent miscarriages, or a previous pregnancy with a chromosomal abnormality? Do not worry.
PGT-A (Pre-implantation genetic testing) is a clinical procedure that checks an embryo for chromosomal abnormalities before it is transferred to the uterus during IVF. PGT-A testing identifies genetic issues that can cause implantation failure, miscarriage, and birth defects in a baby born through IVF.
As the best IVF centre in Delhi, we aim to give both the uterus and the embryo the best possible chance to thrive. Dr Arushi Sethi uses her experience and compassionate support to guide patients towards parenthood.
What is PGT or Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis/Testing?
PGT-A, previously called preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy, checks embryos for the correct number of chromosomes before transfer. Embryos with missing or extra chromosomes are called aneuploid.
They have a lower chance of leading to pregnancy and, in rare cases, can cause a genetic condition. Embryos with the right number of chromosomes are called euploid. PGT-A testing helps us identify euploid embryos so we can avoid transferring aneuploid ones.
This screening is also helpful for detecting common chromosomal issues such as Down syndrome. It gives couples clearer information to make confident decisions during IVF.
How is PGT-A Performed?
PGT-A fits into your standard IVF cycle and adds a genetic check before transfer. At Golden IVF, our experts handle embryo implantation with precision and care.
1. Ovarian Stimulation
We use hormonal injections for about 10 to 14 days to help your ovaries mature several eggs.
2. Egg Collection and Fertilisation
Eggs are collected under sedation and fertilised in the lab. For PGT-A testing, ICSI is often used to support fertilisation.
3. Blastocyst Culture
Embryos are grown to day 5 or 6 until they reach the blastocyst stage. At this point, there are enough cells for embryo genetic testing.
4. Trophectoderm Biopsy
An embryologist carefully removes 5 to 10 cells from the outer layer. This layer forms the placenta, not the baby.
5. Genetic Analysis and Freezing
The cells go to a genetics lab while embryos are vitrified. Results for preimplantation genetic testing for aneuploidy usually arrive in 1 to 3 weeks.
6. Frozen Embryo Transfer
Experts thaw a chromosomally normal embryo and transfer it to a prepared cycle. Your clinic will discuss the PGT-A cost during counselling.
Who Should Consider PGT-A?
PGT-A is not compulsory for every couple undergoing IVF. However, embryo genetic testing is recommended for:
- Patients prone to spontaneous miscarriages
- Individuals who have had several unsuccessful IVF cycles
- Patients with a family history of genetic disorders
- Women over 35 years undergoing IVF
- Individuals with a previous pregnancy affected by a chromosomal abnormality
Every patient should discuss their medical history with their doctor to decide if pre-implantation genetic testing is needed for their case.
What are the Benefits of PGT-A Testing?
Embryo genetic testing is not needed for every couple, but it offers clear advantages for those at higher risk.
- PGT-A testing increases the chances of a successful IVF cycle.
- Prevent spontaneous abortions by examining chromosomal issues early.
- Identify whether an embryo carries a specific genetic disorder.
- Lowers the risk of transferring an embryo with chromosomal abnormalities.
- Choosing the best embryo and reducing the need to transfer multiple embryos.
