What is hysteroscopy?

It can be defined as the process of closely examining the womb with the help of a hysteroscope. A hysteroscope is a thin cylindrical illuminated tube that enters the vagina and the uterus for examining irregularities like heavy periods & fibroids. They are classified as:

Diagnostic hysteroscopy
Operative hysteroscopy

Why is it used?

Hysteroscopy is useful in any of the following conditions:

For inspecting the womb and vaginal cervix
For identifying & curing irregular bleeding or heavy periods
For locating and removing scar tissues or adhesions.
For examining the septum ( a malformation in the uterus since birth )
For eradicating polyps and fibroids (non-cancerous growth in the uterus)
Locating displaced IUD

In a nutshell, hysteroscopy can be used for diagnosing uterine abnormalities. Other methods such as Ultrasound and Biopsy can also be used as their alternative, but they don’t match the accuracy of hysteroscopy.

How is it carried out?

The duration of the procedure is near about an hour wherein only 5-10 mins are required for the actual process if diagnostic hysteroscopy is being carried out. The procedure is initiated by providing local or general anaesthesia to the patient.

The degree of pain varies from person to person. Sometimes even local anaesthesia is also not required.

Unlike laparoscopy, there is no need for skin incision. Rather the hysteroscope is inserted via the vagina of the patient.

The doctor examines the pathway leading to the womb and fallopian tube. In the case of operative hysteroscopy, small tools are also inserted to carry out the surgery.
